  • 58% of Small Businesses Are Already Using Generative AI. Here’s What They’re Doing With It.

The Number That Should Change How You Think About AI

For years, AI felt like something that belonged to companies with dedicated data science teams and technology budgets measured in the millions. That story is now out of date. The US Chamber of Commerce’s 2025 Empowering Small Business report – which surveyed 3,870 US businesses with fewer than 250 employees in June 2025 – found that 58% of small businesses say they use generative AI. That is up from 40% in 2024 and more than double where adoption stood just two years ago.

The question is no longer whether small businesses are using generative AI. The question is what they are using it for – and whether your business is in the 42% that has not yet started, or in the majority that has.

What Small Businesses Are Actually Doing with Generative AI

The same US Chamber report found that generative AI has become the second most popular technology tool among small businesses, used by 44% – exceeding social media at 42% as a business tool. The most common use cases break down into a few clear categories:

1. Marketing and Content

Writing is where most small businesses begin. AI drafts blog posts, social media updates, email campaigns, product descriptions, and proposals faster than any team member can produce them from scratch. The human edits and approves; the AI does the heavy lifting of the first draft. For a business with one marketing person – or none – this is often a genuine operational unlock.

2. Customer Service and FAQ Handling

AI-powered chatbots now handle the standard questions that used to require staff time: appointment booking, business hours, product availability, shipping status, and the most common troubleshooting steps. The business gets 24/7 coverage for routine inquiries without adding headcount. Staff time shifts to the conversations that require genuine human judgment.

3. Document Summarisation and Processing

Contracts, legal documents, insurance policies, vendor agreements, and lengthy reports all share one characteristic: they take time to read. Generative AI reads them in seconds and produces plain-language summaries of the key terms, obligations, and risks. For businesses in legal, real estate, healthcare, and insurance, this is one of the clearest early wins.

4. Reporting and Business Intelligence

McKinsey’s November 2025 State of AI survey – 1,993 participants across 105 countries, conducted June–July 2025 – found that revenue increases from AI are most commonly reported in marketing and sales, strategy and corporate finance, and product and service development. For small businesses, this often shows up as automated reporting: AI pulls data from CRM, accounting, or project management systems and generates a plain-English summary of what is happening in the business, without a team member spending hours compiling it.

5. Hiring and People Operations

AI drafts job descriptions, screens incoming applications against defined criteria, generates structured interview questions, and summarises candidate notes after conversations. For a small business hiring without an HR team, this reduces the time-to-hire and improves the consistency of the process.

The Gap Between Using AI and Getting Value From AI

The US Chamber report also found that 82% of small businesses using AI increased their workforce over the past year – reinforcing that AI is not primarily a headcount-reduction tool for small businesses. It is an output multiplier: it lets a team of ten do what used to require a team of fourteen.

But there is a meaningful difference between using AI to write one-off social posts and building an AI-integrated workflow that consistently saves hours every week. The former is a feature. The latter is a competitive advantage. The businesses pulling ahead are the ones making the move from ad hoc to integrated.

If your business is in the 42% that has not yet started – or in the majority that has started but not scaled – a conversation about what an integrated AI workflow looks like for your specific business is where to begin. Book a free AI strategy call at DoSystemsInc.com.
